Destiny Solutions Opens 2011-2012 Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 31, 2011

In today?s fast paced and competitive workforce, outdated knowledge is not an option. Instead, individuals need to be continually improving their skills and understanding to stay on top. Destiny Solutions, a company known for crafting superior, innovative products and services to meet the unique needs of lifelong learners, is proud to offer the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship to two deserving lifelong learners.

?It can be hard to balance classes with a career and a personal life,? said Shaul Kuper, CEO of Destiny Solutions. ?Often, many are not able to advance due to economic circumstances and it is our hope that the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship can help two exceptional people this way.?

Destiny Solutions launched the award in 2008 as a tribute to Dr. Mary Cone Barrie (1945-2009). She was the director of the School of Continuing Studies and the University of Toronto, the company?s first customer and the person who inspired Destiny Solutions to do great things. Devoted to her community and passionate about adult education, she remains known for her attentiveness to student needs and a devotion to her instructors and staff. ?Destiny is honored to present this scholarship in her name as recognition of her contribution to so many during her lifetime,? Mr. Kuper said.

Award Information

The Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship is offered annually to recognize the efforts of two individuals who are improving their lives with lifelong learning. Traditionally, campuses were filled with 18 to 22 year olds looking to attain their undergraduate degree after high school. Today, 75 per cent of students on campus do not fit into this category. Instead, the ?new traditional? student has spent time away from school in the workforce. They often support a family and challenge themselves to balance their classes with their lives.

There are few scholarships available for the ?new traditional? students, not all employers offer financial assistance and many students are between careers. The Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship is available to any currently enrolled ?new traditional? learner residing in Canada or the United States who has demonstrated a propensity for lifelong learning.

Applications must be received by mail before 5:00 p.m. on July 29, 2011.

Recipients of this award will be selected in August 2011 by a committee that includes Andy and Jesse Barrie, husband and daughter of Dr. Mary Cone Barrie. Winners will be announced in September 2011 and will be contacted directly by Destiny Solutions.

Past Winners

Since its inception in 2008, the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship has helped five individuals along the path the lifelong learning. Last year?s winners were two single mothers.

Stephanie Taylor lost her job in May 2009 and was diagnosed with cancer the following December.

?I didn?t miss a single class during all of this,? the 46-year-old single mother of two teenagers said. ?I never thought education was important growing up, but I was wrong. It makes us better. With education, we can continually reinvent ourselves until we?re the best we can be. It?s a privilege, and this scholarship is helping me get my life back together.?

Ms. Taylor, who expects to finish her degree in business administration at Buck?s County before next May, said the proceeds of the scholarship have made managing the costs of school and medication a little easier.

?Winning the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship helped me immeasurably,? she said. ?Not only did it help me financially in order to continue my studies, but as a single mother with a very limited support network, it gave me the support and recognition that very often go missing in my life.?

Charlene Clay grew up in an abusive home with an alcoholic mother. As a single mother of three, Ms. Clay enrolled in a program at Concordia University in Wisconsin while volunteering at a treatment centre and working as a customer service representative.

?My goal is to be able to treat young girls just like me,? she said. ?Girls whose moms and dads have alcohol problems. They don?t have any hopes and dreams, or at least no one to tell them they can have some.?

Ms. Clay completed her degree at in December 2010 and began her graduate degree in public speaking in May 2011.

?Winning the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship not only helped me continue my education on a financial level but sharing my story of such personal triumph for the first time, and knowing that it was received in such a humble way, is why I have decided to pursue my graduate degree in public speaking,? Ms. Clay said. ?Although am terrified of public speaking, I have found the courage to ? share my story in such a public way that am sure I will touch and motivate other girls and women to get their education or continue their education.?
